Relative Strength of ANTM
I blogged earlier today about the negativity aura surrounding Indonesia’s Index (negative aura = negative regional indices). By the time of this writing, Jakarta Composite Index is down by 18 points (1.41%) and so does Nikkei 225 1.88%, Hang Seng 0.58%, and Dow Jones Industrial closed down 1.09%.
However, behind the shackles of red ink on your monitor, there are still some stocks in Indonesian market that shines green which is ANTM (PT Aneka Tambang Tbk). I’ll say that this stock has a relative strength compared to the whole market. When the market tanked, this stock can endure and even turn those bear participant into bull.
Indeed that most of the factor why ANTM gained strength is because the increase of nickel price in the world that accounted for most of the income for this company, but nonetheless, this company still gained a significant portion of its price that doesn’t affected by the index fluctuation. For this type of company, the price rule that I described earlier isn’t valid. This company has a relative strength to the index.
Of course, to find stocks that have relative strength compared to the market isn’t as easy as it seems like. You have to see the price movement in the long run for both the individual stock and the market as a whole. Does the stock tanked when the market flunked a year ago? 2 years ago? 3? If the stock doesn’t suffer too much when the market gone awry and consistantly book growth, then you got your self a good stock with a relative strength to the market. The safest and probably the best pick for any investor.
