Attack of the Ads
According to a Slashdot entry, 2005 is a turning point for advertisers. This made me wonder, will our internet safe from intrusive traditional advertising? We have seen a great number of sites using Google Adsense, YPN, and any other contextual advertising agency this year. We have also seen other kinds of advertising emerge on the net.
I mean, there’s nothing wrong on using those kind of advertising on sites. I might use it on this site in the future when the maintenance cost becomes unbearable. It’s just that, with more and more site space being used to serve ads, we are developing a habit to ignore those ads alltogether.
This inturn, will endanger the very ideas of contextual advertising. We will ignore ads, any ads that come to our eyes even when the ads are targeted and relevant to the text we are reading.
It’s great to have companies aiming their big advertising budget towards the web (which means more prosperity for the webmasters). But with more people developing this ad-blind attitude, the effectiveness of online marketing will fall sharply and in the end, less and less business will advertise on the web.
Contextual advertising must be redefined. Any ideas?
