Alternative Domain Names (I)
Have this ever occured to you?
You are starting a new business and you found a right catchy name for it. Of course since web presence is very important today, you try to buy the domain. When you register, the domain name is already taken and apparently, it’s parked and up for resale
Well I believe that occured to alot of people (including my self actually). Most of catchy name for top level domain such as .com; .net; and .org (not a very business-y domain don’t you think?) is already taken and mostly parked and up for sale in an unbelievably high price.
You may think that you’ve lost your business (especially if your business is online based) because now you can only choose a-very-long-and-not-catchy-domain-names.com instead of a short and easy to remember one. But worry not, even how saturated the .com (and .net) domain market for you, I think we can find a way around this.
The key to successfuly create a buzz on your web presence is simply having a unique service (i.e. Flickr), but let’s get true to ourself, how many of us can create a truly unique service? Afterall, what we need is a web presence, not a buzz of how cool our web service is. And to have an effective web presence, we need an easy to remember domain name.
But wait, I thought you said that TLDs are hard to find?
You can’t be more right, yes TLDs are now hard to find. But we don’t necessarily need a .com domain name do we? All we need is a domain that is easy to remember. Better, a domain that is truly represents what we are doing. I think it’s time for us (and any netpreneur) to start using an alternative domain name from .ac to .zw. Imagine that you use py.ja.ma as your domain name simply because you sell pyjamas!
But hang on there buddy, read the pros and cons before you charge through buying those alternative domains :)
